Luscious Lips

Published by admin under Filler, Surgical Procedures

lucious lipsFor centuries, a woman’s lips have been viewed as a sign of her sensuality. A while ago, the film Pretty Woman and its lead actress brought the lips back into the forefront of fashion. Look around. It seems that luscious lips are everywhere.

Luscious lips are a key element of almost every photo in every fashion magazine. Unfortunately, not everyone is blessed with a pair of naturally beautiful lips. The few who are don’t get to keep them without a little help. Over time the sun, the elements, smoking and the aging process take their toll. The corners of the mouth begin to droop. The V-shaped area of the upper lip known as Cupid’s ‘Bow begins to flatten out and lose its youthful fullness. Vertical wrinkles or Smoker’s Lines begin to appear, causing your lipstick to bleed. That once sensual look is gone or greatly diminished.

Thanks to today’s many medical advances there is help. Aging lips can be rejuvenated and less full lips can be enhanced.

What are my treatment options?

Lip enhancement and rejuvenation are two of the most frequently requested cosmetic procedures. Your options range from the latest in laser treatments to natural injectable fillers or synthetic implants. All of these fillers are s0ft, pliable, and have a natural feel.

Which treatment is best for me?

Your surgeon will select the procedure best for you. Every surgeon will have his or her own procedure preferences for a variety of reasons, including the range in shape of each patient’s lips and the results desited.

Laser lip rejuvenation

The “Remington Lip” is an exciting procedure using a combination of laser treatments to rejuvenate the wrinkled or aged lip. During the healing process of this procedure, the collagen and elastic tissue beneath the skin will tighten and remodel, restoring the “V” to Cupid’s Bow and providing a more healthy, youthful shape to your lips.

Following lip enhancement with one of the injectable products, your lips remain swollen for a few hours only. You may return ro normal activities the same day. Touch-up treatments may be necessary. When implants are used for lip augmentation, discomfort is minimal. Small stitches may be used to close the implant site. These stitches will be removed in a few days. Some swelling may last up to a week. Elevating your head and applying cold compresses during the first 24 hours will help keep this to a minimum. Postoperative discomfort can be controlled with medication. Chewing food and brushing your teeth may be a little uncomfortable for a few days. There may be some bruising which can be covered with make-up.

Generally, patients experience a slightly longer recovery period after laser lip rejuvenation. Most of the healing occurs during the first one or two weeks. During this rime the treated areas must be kept moist. Postoperative discomfort can be controlled with medication. The initial redness fades to a light pink.

Injectable lip enhancement

Your injectable options include AlloDerm®, Autologen®, Dermalogen®, Fascian®, Fat Transfer and Zyderm® or Zyplast® collagen. Artecoll®, HylaForm® and Restylane® are options that may be available soon.

Zyderm and Zyplast injectable collagen are used to enhance the natural silhouette of the upper border of the upper lip and Cupid’s Bow. They also fill in the vertical lines along the upper lip that often cause lipstick to “bleed” beyond the lip line. Autologen, Fascian and Dermalogen can be used in the same way that Zyderm and Zyplast collagen are used. Autologen is made from your own skin.

Usually, this tissue is obtained from any excess tissue you may have had from a previous cosmetic procedure performed in our office. Dermalogen and Fascian are injectable forms of human collagen made from donated skin and recovered by an accredited tissue bank.

Fat Transfer, also called autologous fat transplantation or micro-liposuction, plumps up your lips using fat taken from inconspicuous sites on your body. Fat transfer to the lips is a safe, natural, non-allergenic procedure designed to restore damaged or diminished dermal deficiencies.

Implant augmentation for lips

AlloDerm is a dermal graft/implant that was initially used as a skin replacement for burn patients. Now surgeons worldwide recognize its benefits as a safe, natural implant to replace aged or inadequate lip tissue and rejuvenate the wrinkled or aged lip. SoftForm® and soft “ePTFE”(expanded polytetrafluoroethyLene) implants lead the way in synthetic options. SoftForm and soft “ePTFE” implants have proven to provide a safe, predictable, non-allergenic improvement for thin or aging lips.

Ear Surgery – Otoplasty in Burbank

Published by admin under General, Surgical Procedures

beautiful earsProbably no other physical characteristic cries out for plastic surgery more than protruding ears. Even if the ears are only mildly distorted, the condition can lead to self-consciousness. Ear surgery, known as Otoplasty, can be performed at any age after the ears have reached full size, usually around five to six years of age. Not only is it possible to “pin back” ears, but ears can also be reshaped, reduced in size, or made more symmetrical. Having the procedure at a young age is highly desirable because the cartilage is extremely pliable which permits greater ease of shaping. Adults may also benefit from this procedure, which improves self esteem with relative ease.

What can I expect from an Otoplasty?

Ear surgery will not alter hearing ability. A successful Otoplasty results in the ears being in proportion to the size and shape of the face and head.

Besides protruding ears, other undesirable characteristics can be helped with this surgery. These include a “lop ear,” when the tip seems to fold down and forward, a “cupped ear,” which is a very small ear, and “shell ear,” when the curve in the outer rim, as well as the natural folds and creases, are missing. Surgery can also improve large or stretched earlobes, or lobes with large creases and wrinkles. Dr. Orloff can even build new ears for those who were born without them or who lost them through injury.

How is Otoplasty performed?

Ear surgery usually takes about two to three hours. The procedure is generally performed on an out-patient basis under general anesthesia. The technique utilized for the surgery will depend on the problem being corrected.

A more common technique used for this surgery is to make a small incision in the back of the ear to expose the ear cartilage. This incision is made in the natural fold where the ear is joined to the head. Dr. Orloff will sculpt the cartilage and bend it back toward the head. Non-removable stitches may be used to help maintain the new shape. If needed, Dr. Orloff will remove a cartilage to provide a more natural-looking fold when the surgery is complete.

Otoplasty before and after

Another technique involves a similar incision in the back of the ear. Skin is removed and stitches are used to fold the cartilage back on itself to reshape the ear without removing cartilage.

In most cases, ear surgery will leave a faint scar in the back of the ear that will fade with time. Even if only one ear appears to protrude, surgery is usually performed on both ears for a better balance.

What is the recovery like?

Soft dressings will be applied to the ears and will remain for a few days. Any mild discomfort is easily controlled with medications. If you are accustomed to sleeping on your side, your sleep patterns may be disrupted for a week or so because you cannot put any pressure on the ear areas.

Nose Surgery – Burbank and the San Fernando Valley

Published by admin under Ear Surgery, Surgical Procedures

Rhinoplasty - Nose SurgeryRhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is one of the most common of all plastic surgery procedures. This surgical procedure can produce changes in the appearance, structure, and function of the nose. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of the nose, change the shape of the tip, narrow the width of the nostrils, or change the angle between the nose and the upper lip. This surgical procedure can help correct birth defects, nasal injuries, and help relieve some breathing problems.

How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?

Rhinoplasty surgery is customized for each patient. There are various techniques used, depending on the patient’s needs and the desired outcome.

Rhinoplasty is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under either general or local anesthesia. During surgery, the skin of the nose IS separated from its supporting framework of bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage are then sculpted to the desired shape. Depending on the desired result, some bone and cartilage may be removed, or tissue may be added (either from another part of the body or using a synthetic filler). After the nose has been reshaped, the skin and tissue are redraped over the structure of the nose.

Incisions are generally made inside the nose, so (hat they are invisible after the surgery.

When the surgery is complete, a splint is applied outside the nose to support the new shape of the nose as it heals. Nasal packing or soft plastic splints may be used inside the nose to provide additional support.

Rhinioplasty before and after

Swelling and bruising around they eyes may increase at first, reaching a peak after a few days. A smal amount of bleeding is common during the first few days following surgery, and you may continue to feel some stuffiness for several weeks. You will be instructed on how to care for your surgical wounds and receive tips on how to help reduce swelling, such as by applying cold compresses. You may be instructed not to blow your nose for a short time while the tissues heal.

Dr. Orloff will remove any surgical dressings and splints at the point during your recovery it is appropriate.
